FIELD TRIP: Visit the beautiful flooding savannah and gallery forest on “Los Llanos”

After a decades-long civil war, Colombia has set its sights on a peaceful future based on its rich natural and cultural heritage. With the peace agreement now securely in place, there is an opportunity to restore the health of the country’s protected areas and prevent damage or loss to the many wild wonders that still exist.

One of the main approaches to this opportunity is Project Finance for Permanence (PFP), an innovative means for permanent and fully funded protected areas. Through the PFP initiative in Colombia, called Heritage Colombia, a fund will be created to ensure the protection, proper management and governance of land within the system. This includes the promotion of well-managed ranching landscapes throughout the country, including in the Orinoco Region, where the expansion of cattle ranches threaten the already vulnerable ecoregion.

Delegates attending the TFA 2020 Annual Meeting in Bogota can take time out of the conference room with a visit to Colombia’s Orinoco Region, before continuing their journey to Lima for the opening of the Good Growth Conference.

Field trip participants will experience how ranching, biodiversity and eco-tourism can thrive in post conflict Colombia through a delicate balance of conservation, sustainable beef production and an ultimate love for the land.

Itinerary

Expenses: All expenses will be covered by WWF (including flights from Bogota to Yopal, accommodation and meals). Delegates will be required to manage additional personal expenses and Bogota airport transfer expenses.

DAY 1. Friday May 10

• Early morning flight from Bogota to Yopal
• Traditional Breakfast in Yopal
• Transfer accommodation at El Encanto de Gaunapalo nature reserve
• Afternoon introduction talk and partner presentations
• Game drive to the flooded savannah
• Dinner and traditional music

DAY 2. Saturday May 11

• Bird watching tour
• Breakfast
• Game drives to the flooded savanna- Biodiversity and Cattel Ranching production
• Lunch
• Transfer to Yopal
• Return flight to Bogota
